Medieval Mdina Festival in Mdina
The Medieval Mdina Festival transforms Malta's former capital into a living recreation of the medieval and early-modern periods for a weekend each spring, with costumed performers, reenactors, craft stalls and street entertainment filling the fortified city's narrow lanes. Mdina's largely intact medieval and Baroque streetscape gives the festival an authentic backdrop rare among historical reenactment events.
Mdina served as Malta's capital for well over a thousand years, from Roman and Arab-era settlement through the medieval period and into the early years of the Knights of St John's rule, before Valletta was built after the Great Siege of 1565 and the seat of power shifted to the coast.
