The story

Malta Book Festival in MFCC Ta' Qali

The Malta Book Festival, known locally as il-Festival Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb, is organised by the National Book Council and traces back to 1979 as the Fiera tal-Ktieb book fair, marking 45 years of history by 2026. Now held at the MFCC in Ta' Qali, with the 2026 edition running 4 to 8 November, it draws around 40,000 visitors and over 50 exhibitors each year.

In 1979, Malta's book trade organised what was then simply called the Fiera tal-Ktieb, a book fair intended to bring publishers, booksellers and readers together under one roof.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Maltese cultural events can claim continuous operation since 1979, and the festival's evolution from a straightforward book fair into a full festival celebrating book culture in its many forms reflects genuine institutional depth rather than a recent creation

02

The mystery stays covered

Its guest list over the decades has included genuinely major international literary names, including Salman Rushdie, Irvine Welsh, Anthony Horowitz, Naomi Klein and John Boyne, an unusually strong roster for a national book festival on an island of Malta's size
