Nadur Carnival in Nadur
The Nadur Carnival is a spontaneous, unorganised street celebration held each carnival season in the Gozo village of Nadur, historically known as the Silent Carnival because participants once stayed quiet to protect their identity in disguise on a small island. Masked and hooded revellers, called Maskarati, fill the streets at sunset in grotesque, satirical costumes with no committee, rules or organised parade structure.
Gozo is a small island in every sense that matters to a story like this one: a population where nearly everyone eventually crosses paths with everyone else, where a face glimpsed through a mask's eye-holes might still be recognised by voice, gait or a familiar item of clothing.
