The story

Feast of St George Victoria in Victoria/Rabat

The Feast of St George, held in mid July in Victoria, Gozo, honours the patron saint of the Basilica of St George, one of the two great rival churches at the heart of Gozo's capital. The feast features an elaborate statue procession, extensive street and church decoration, and a fireworks display that plays into the long-running rivalry between St George's and the neighbouring Cathedral parish.

Victoria, Gozo's capital and historically known as Rabat, is dominated by two enormous churches standing close enough to see each other across the rooftops: the Cathedral inside the Citadel walls and the Basilica of St George in the town below.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

St George's feast sits at the centre of one of Malta and Gozo's most famous inter-parish rivalries, since the Basilica of St George and Victoria's Cathedral, standing only a short walk apart, have competed for centuries over the scale and artistry of their feasts, decoration and fireworks, giving this festa an intensity of local pride distinct from many single-parish Maltese celebrations

02

The mystery stays covered

The Basilica itself, rebuilt in the early twentieth century and richly decorated inside, gives the feast a particularly grand church setting for its liturgical and processional elements
