Espaces Culturels du Ramadan in Nouakchott

Espaces Culturels du Ramadan, or Ramadan Cultural Spaces, is a Ministry of Culture initiative held during the holy month across districts of Nouakchott. Its second edition, themed Ramadan: Recueillement et Culture, or Contemplation and Culture, featured theatrical performances, medh praise poetry, and folk dances aimed at transforming Ramadan nights into spaces for reflection, literature, and shared cultural identity.

During the holy month of Ramadan, when daytime hours across Mauritania are marked by fasting and increased prayer, Nouakchott's Ministry of Culture runs a program specifically designed to give the month's evenings, after the daily fast is broken, a dedicated cultural life of their own.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The initiative is distinctive for deliberately using Ramadan evenings, traditionally centered on prayer, family gathering, and rest after the day's fast, as occasions for organized public cultural programming rather than treating the holy month as a pause in civic cultural life

02

The mystery stays covered

Its official theme, Contemplation and Culture, signals an explicit intent to frame artistic expression, theater, poetry, and dance, as compatible with and even supportive of the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan rather than in tension with it, a framing that reflects a specific understanding of how culture and religious observance can coexist within Mauritania's Muslim-majority society

03

The city starts moving

Running across multiple districts, including confirmed evenings in Nouakchott South and Nouakchott Ouest, the initiative also functions as one of the more geographically distributed cultural programs on the capital's calendar during any given year
