Huey Atlixcayotl in Atlixco
Huey Atlixcayotl, Nahuatl for the Great Fiesta of Atlixco, gathers indigenous delegations from all eleven ethnogeographic regions of Puebla state on San Miguel Hill each year on the last Sunday of September. First revived in 1965 and declared Cultural Heritage of Puebla state in 1996, the open-air festival at a site called Netotiloyan, meaning place of dance, showcases pre-Hispanic ritual dance, music, cuisine and crafts from across the state.
On the last Sunday of every September, San Miguel Hill above Atlixco fills with a procession of dance troupes that have traveled from across Puebla state, each representing a distinct indigenous region, to perform on a hillside site called Netotiloyan, the place of dance.
