Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato

Festival Internacional Cervantino, known widely as El Cervantino, is an annual fall festival in Guanajuato city that grew from short plays by Miguel de Cervantes performed in the city's plazas starting in 1953. Since expanding with federal support in 1972 to include international programming, it has become the most important international artistic and cultural event in Mexico and Latin America.

Guanajuato's Festival Internacional Cervantino began modestly in 1953, when Enrique Ruelas of the University of Guanajuato organized performances of entremeses, short comedic plays by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, staged in the city's plazas.
