Mazatlan Carnival in Mazatlan
Mazatlan's Carnival is one of the largest pre-Lenten celebrations in the world, held along the city's oceanfront malecon in the days before Ash Wednesday each February or March. Official city-sponsored celebrations date to 1898, and the modern event features elaborate floats, elected carnival royalty, fireworks, concerts, and a naval-themed opening ceremony reflecting the city's identity as a Pacific port.
Mazatlan's identity as a working Pacific port city runs through nearly every element of its Carnival, one of the largest and, by local promotion, most celebrated pre-Lenten festivals anywhere.
