Hanal Pixan Merida in Merida

Hanal Pixan, Yucatec Maya for food of the souls, is the regional Day of the Dead tradition observed across Yucatan and centered in Merida from October 31 to November 2. Families build single-tiered altars with food, flowers and candles, bake the underground corn tamale called mucbipollo, and Merida hosts the Paseo de las Animas, an evening procession of residents painted and dressed as departed souls walking from the cemetery downtown.

In much of central Mexico, Day of the Dead altars rise in symbolic tiers, each level representing a stage in the journey between the living world and the afterlife.
