Morelia International Film Festival in Morelia
The Morelia International Film Festival, known by its Spanish initials FICM, has filled the colonial theaters and plazas of Michoacan's capital with Mexican and international cinema since 2003. Built to showcase emerging Mexican filmmakers alongside global auteurs, it runs each October and became an Academy Awards qualifying festival for short films and documentaries in 2008, cementing its place in the film industry calendar.
Morelia is not the city most people associate with international cinema, and that is precisely the point behind the festival founders' original wager in 2003.
