The story

Morelia International Film Festival in Morelia

The Morelia International Film Festival, known by its Spanish initials FICM, has filled the colonial theaters and plazas of Michoacan's capital with Mexican and international cinema since 2003. Built to showcase emerging Mexican filmmakers alongside global auteurs, it runs each October and became an Academy Awards qualifying festival for short films and documentaries in 2008, cementing its place in the film industry calendar.

Morelia is not the city most people associate with international cinema, and that is precisely the point behind the festival founders' original wager in 2003.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

FICM grew out of a specific ambition: give Mexican cinema a serious home stage while pulling international attention to Morelia's baroque architecture

02

The mystery stays covered

Since its founding the festival forged a partnership with the Cannes Critics Week that helped launch directors such as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Guillermo del Toro and Fernando Eimbcke onto the world stage

03

The city starts moving

Its Artistic Excellence Award, introduced in 2018, has honored figures including Francis Ford Coppola in 2024

04

The water draws everyone in

Screenings unfold in restored colonial cinemas and open plazas across the historic center, and past guests have included Quentin Tarantino, Alfonso Cuaron, Juliette Binoche and Isabelle Huppert, giving a mid-sized city an outsized presence on the festival circuit
