Guelaguetza in Oaxaca City
The Guelaguetza is Oaxaca City's flagship annual festival, staged on the two Mondays following July 16 at the open-air Auditorio Guelaguetza on the Cerro del Fortin. Delegations from Oaxaca's eight regions perform traditional dances in regional dress, from the feathered Danza de la Pluma to the pineapple-tossing Flor de Pina of Tuxtepec, drawing visitors from across Mexico and abroad each July.
High above Oaxaca City, on a hillside known as Cerro del Fortin, thousands gather every July to watch dancers in feathered headdresses, embroidered huipiles, and regional dress perform a program that traces back centuries.
