Day of the Dead Patzcuaro in Patzcuaro

Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, centers on the overnight vigils held on Janitzio and other islands in Lake Patzcuaro on November 1 and 2. Purepecha families, especially those from fishing communities, keep candlelit watch at cemeteries through the night, decorating graves with marigolds and offerings, a tradition rooted in Indigenous Purepecha belief that has also become one of Mexico's most internationally recognized Dia de Muertos observances.

Patzcuaro's Day of the Dead observance is one of Mexico's oldest and most distinctive expressions of Dia de Muertos, and it grew out of a place with deep pre-Hispanic roots.
