The story

Feria de la Primavera y de la Paz in San Cristobal de las Casas

The Feria de la Primavera y de la Paz, also called the Fiesta Mayor, has run in San Cristobal de las Casas since a decree by Chiapas governor Jose Panteleon Dominguez established it as the Feria de la Paz on January 6, 1868. Held each spring between March and April across eight days, the highland Chiapas festival brings together neighborhoods and surrounding communities for parades, concerts, sports, mechanical rides and craft and food stalls, celebrating the arrival of spring in the city's cool mountain climate.

On January 6, 1868, Chiapas governor Jose Panteleon Dominguez issued a decree establishing the Feria de la Paz in San Cristobal de las Casas, a formal civic gesture in a period when the young Mexican republic, and Chiapas within it, had recently weathered significant political conflict.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals in Mexico carry a documented, continuous history stretching back to an 1868 gubernatorial decree, which makes the Feria de la Primavera y de la Paz one of the country's oldest continuously observed civic celebrations, now well over 150 years old

02

The mystery stays covered

Known locally as the Fiesta Mayor, or Grand Festival, it functions as San Cristobal de las Casas's single most important annual event, drawing in neighborhoods, colonias and outlying communities from the Chiapas highlands to unite under one shared celebration

03

The city starts moving

The festival's dual name, referencing both spring and peace, reflects its origin as a peace-themed civic occasion in a state whose 19th century history included significant conflict, giving the modern flower-and-music celebration a quieter historical weight beneath its lively surface
