Juquila Virgin Festival in Santa Catarina Juquila
The festival of the Virgen de Juquila draws one of Mexico's largest pilgrimages to the small town of Santa Catarina Juquila in the Oaxacan Sierra, with the main feast day on December 8 and a secondary major pilgrimage around the feast's anniversary in early September. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel on foot, by bicycle, and by vehicle from across Oaxaca and beyond to venerate the small dark-skinned Virgin Mary statue housed in the town's basilica.
High in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, the small town of Santa Catarina Juquila becomes, twice a year, one of the most heavily visited pilgrimage sites in southern Mexico.
