Tampico Carnival in Tampico / Ciudad Madero / Altamira
Tampico's Carnival is a joint pre-Lenten celebration spanning the neighboring Gulf coast cities of Tampico, Ciudad Madero, and Altamira, with roots tracing back to the nineteenth century, making it one of Mexico's oldest carnival traditions. Parades of costumed comparsas, elected carnival royalty, and live music fill the tri-city area's streets and waterfront in the days before Ash Wednesday.
Among Mexico's many pre-Lenten carnivals, Tampico's stands out for its age and for the way it spans three adjoining Gulf coast cities at once.
