The story

European Night of Museums Chisinau in Chisinau

European Night of Museums is Chisinau's contribution to the international European Museum Night movement, launched in 2005 by France's Ministry of Culture and held under the patronage of the Council of Europe, UNESCO and ICOM. Timed around International Museum Day on May 18, Chisinau's edition takes place May 17, keeping institutions such as the National Museum of History, the National Art Museum and the National Museum of Ethnography open late with free exhibitions, concerts and workshops.

European Night of Museums did not originate in Moldova.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Being part of an international movement gives Chisinau's Night of Museums a scale of context a purely local event would lack

02

The mystery stays covered

Originating in France in 2005 and now carried out under the patronage of the Council of Europe, UNESCO and ICOM, the event places Chisinau's museums within a shared calendar observed across Europe on the same weekend each May

03

The city starts moving

Locally, the appeal comes from access: institutions that normally close early, including the National Museum of History, the National Art Museum and the National Museum of Ethnography, stay open into the night, free of charge, with programming built for the occasion

04

The water draws everyone in

That mix of free admission, extended hours and concerts and workshops draws crowds in the tens of thousands across a single evening
