Saint Devote Celebrations in Monaco-Ville
Each January 26 and 27, Monaco-Ville honors Sainte Devote, the principality's patron saint, with a procession bearing her relic, a religious service at Monaco Cathedral, and the ritual burning of a symbolic boat at her harborside chapel, a tradition observed since 1874. The Sovereign Prince and Princely Family attend alongside Monegasque dignitaries, marking one of Monaco's oldest continuously observed religious commemorations.
Sainte Devote's story begins not in Monaco but in Corsica, where, according to tradition, she was born around 283 AD into a Christian family during a period when practicing the faith openly carried real danger.
