The story

Nomads Day Festival in Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve

Nomads' Day Festival is a two-day September gathering at the Steppe Nomads tourist camp in Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve, Tuv Province, organized by tour operator Selena Travel. Starting September 17, it brings local herding families together with domestic and international visitors for a mini Naadam of wrestling, horse racing and archery, alongside traditional nomadic customs and games.

Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve sits within Tuv Province's Bayandelger soum, a stretch of steppe and wetland known for its birdlife, including nesting cranes, and for herding families who have grazed livestock across its grasslands for generations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's distinction lies in its setting and scale: rather than a large urban Naadam, it takes place within Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve, an area known for its steppe wildlife and landscape, at a dedicated tourist camp built around showcasing nomadic life

02

The mystery stays covered

Its recognition, winning the Best for Conservation of Cultural Heritage award at Virgin Holidays' Responsible Tourism Awards in 2009, points to a deliberate emphasis on sustaining herder traditions and involving local families directly rather than staging a purely commercial spectacle

03

The city starts moving

Visitors get close contact with herders' games, customs and competitions in a smaller, more intimate format than Ulaanbaatar's national Naadam
