The story

Karakorum Naadam in Kharkhorin

Karakorum Naadam is the regional Naadam celebration held each July in Kharkhorin, the small town built near the ruins of Karakorum, capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Chinggis Khan in 1220 and later of the Northern Yuan dynasty. Wrestling, archery and horse racing take place alongside visits to the nearby UNESCO-listed Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia's first Buddhist monastery, built in 1586 partly from stones of the ancient capital.

Every July, the small town of Kharkhorin hosts its own staging of Naadam, Mongolia's Three Manly Games of wrestling, archery and horse racing, on the same nationwide holiday celebrated everywhere from Ulaanbaatar's stadium to provincial towns across the country.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Like other regional Naadam entries in this dataset, this is a provincial staging of the same nationwide holiday rather than a separately invented festival, so its distinct value lies almost entirely in location and history rather than a unique competition format

02

The mystery stays covered

Kharkhorin sits on the site of Karakorum, the capital Chinggis Khan founded in 1220 and which later served the Northern Yuan dynasty, making this the Naadam staging most directly tied to the seat of the Mongol Empire itself

03

The city starts moving

Visitors can combine the wrestling, archery and horse racing with a visit to Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia's first Buddhist monastery, built in 1586 partly from stones salvaged from the ruined ancient capital, giving this Naadam a depth of historical layering that most regional stagings cannot match
