The story

Marrakech du Rire in Marrakech

Marrakech du Rire was an international Francophone comedy festival launched in 2011 by Franco-Moroccan comedian Jamel Debbouze, drawing major French and Maghrebi stand-up acts to Marrakech each summer for a decade before its final edition in 2022. In 2026 a successor event, the Marrakech Comedy Festival, launched under comedian Malik Bentalha, running June 4-6 and marking the first edition without its founding figure.

Marrakech du Rire began in 2011 as a personal project of Jamel Debbouze, a Franco-Moroccan actor and comedian who had already built a following on both sides of the Mediterranean.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What made the original festival distinctive was its concentration of top-tier Francophone comedy talent in one city over a few summer nights: names like Gad Elmaleh, Kev Adams, Malik Bentalha, Florence Foresti, and Dany Boon performed across large halls and open popular stages, giving Marrakech a temporary identity as a capital of French-language stand-up

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 2026 successor keeps that basic format alive under new leadership, produced by Karim Debbouze and fronted by Malik Bentalha, with the first edition's shows set to reach a wider audience through a fall broadcast on Disney+

03

The city starts moving

The transition has not been without friction, Jamel Debbouze has publicly voiced frustration over the rebrand, giving the relaunch an undercurrent of unresolved history alongside its new format
