The story

Azgo Festival in Maputo

Azgo Festival is Mozambique's leading international arts festival, held annually in Maputo each May since around 2014. Combining live music, film, dance, and fashion, it draws Mozambican and pan-African artists to a multi-day program that has grown from a local music showcase into the country's best-known platform for contemporary African creative culture.

Azgo Festival grew out of Maputo's contemporary music scene in the mid-2010s, with early editions reported from around 2014, and has since become, by the account of its own organizers and repeated coverage from Mozambican national press, the country's most prestigious international arts festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Azgo distinguishes itself through the breadth of its programming, pairing concert stages with expo spaces, dialogue sessions under the AZGO DIALOGAR banner, and a street market where young Mozambican clothing and accessory designers sell directly to festivalgoers

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition carries a distinct theme - Kumbeza for its eleventh edition in Marracuene in 2024, and Afrofuturismo for 2025 - that shapes everything from stage design to a fashion competition rewarding the best Afrofuturist outfit

03

The city starts moving

Led by Paulo Chibanga, drummer of the well-known Mozambican band 340ml, the festival has run for over a decade, releasing an annual compilation of featured artists on the streaming platform Serinus, and consistently drawing coverage from national outlets as the country's most prestigious arts gathering
