The story

MOZ SLAM - Campeonato Mocambicano de Poesia Falada in Quelimane and provincial qualifiers

MOZ SLAM, formally the Campeonato Mocambicano de Poesia Falada, is Mozambique's national spoken-word poetry championship. Poets compete through provincial qualifying rounds, including one held in Quelimane, before a Maputo final crowns a national champion who then goes on to represent Mozambique at international slam poetry competitions.

MOZ SLAM, the Campeonato Mocambicano de Poesia Falada, was launched in 2018 to give Mozambique's spoken-word poets a structured, competitive national platform, at a time when slam poetry as a format was already well established in Europe and parts of Africa but had no dedicated championship inside the country.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike a single-city poetry night, MOZ SLAM is built as a nationwide competitive ladder: poets first compete in provincial qualifiers, including a round in Quelimane, before the strongest voices advance to a final in Maputo, usually staged at the Mozambique-China Cultural Centre in front of several hundred spectators

02

The mystery stays covered

The format borrows the international slam poetry convention of scored, timed performances judged partly by randomly chosen audience members, but the content stays rooted in Mozambican Portuguese and local concerns, with poets addressing politics and grief in three-minute unaccompanied performances

03

The city starts moving

The national champion earns the right to represent Mozambique at the Grand Poetry Slam world finals, and past editions have paid tribute to the rapper Azagaia, who judged an earlier final before his death
