Festival Chopi in Zavala

Festival Chopi centers on timbila, the xylophone orchestra tradition of the Chopi people of Zavala district in Inhambane province, recognized by UNESCO in 2005 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Village orchestras of tuned wooden xylophones with gourd resonators perform extended musical suites accompanied by dance and often satirical, socially observant lyrics.

In Zavala district, on the Inhambane coast of southern Mozambique, the Chopi people developed one of Africa's most sophisticated indigenous instrumental traditions: timbila, xylophone orchestras built from carefully tuned wooden keys set over resonating gourds, arranged in graduated sizes so that an ensemble can cover a wide musical range with a dozen or more interlocking parts.
