Taunggyi Hot Air Balloon Festival in Taunggyi

The Taunggyi Hot Air Balloon Festival is the Shan State capital's centuries-old expression of Tazaungdaing, dating to 1894 and held over roughly seven days around the full moon of Tazaungmon, late October into November. Handmade rice-paper and bamboo balloons shaped as animals and mythical creatures fly by day, while nighttime balloons carrying fireworks and lanterns light the sky.

Every year as the full moon of Tazaungmon approaches, late October sliding into November, the hill town of Taunggyi in Shan State fills with something rarely seen elsewhere: hundreds of hand-built balloons, some shaped like elephants, peacocks, dragons or other creatures drawn from imagination and legend, rising over the city.
