The Gobabis Agricultural Show showcases the cattle-farming economy of Gobabis, the regional capital of Namibia's Omaheke Region and the historic heart of the country's beef-cattle industry, once a base for elephant-ivory traders before becoming a Rhenish mission town.

The Otjiherero name for Gobabis is Epako, but its older Khoekhoe name, ǂKhoandabes, tells a stranger story: 'the place where the elephant came to lick,' a reference, according to local oral tradition, to elephant tusks stored in the settlement's well, where the dry Omaheke heat would otherwise crack them.
