The Nama Cultural Festival celebrates Nama heritage in and around Keetmanshoop, the ||Karas Region's administrative capital in southern Namibia, honoring a community descended from the historic Nama clans who settled the area from the early 19th century.

Long before Keetmanshoop became the administrative capital of southern Namibia's ||Karas Region, it was ǂNūǂgoaes, a Nama name meaning 'place of black mud,' given by Kaptein Hendrik Tseib of the Kharo!oan clan after he discovered an iron-rich spring there in 1808 while out hunting.
