Devghat Maghe Sankranti Mela in Devghat
Devghat, sited at the confluence of the Trishuli and Kali Gandaki rivers near Chitwan, hosts one of Nepal's largest Maghe Sankranti melas, a huge annual gathering of Hindu pilgrims who bathe at the sacred river junction. The town, already considered one of the holiest sites in Nepal, is also home to a cave associated with Sita and a well-known Saligram Shila, a stone worshipped as a form of Vishnu.
Devghat occupies an unusual place in Nepal's religious geography: a relatively small town at the meeting point of the Trishuli and Kali Gandaki rivers, near Chitwan, that has nonetheless accumulated a density of sacred associations rivaling far larger pilgrimage centers.
