Gai Jatra Pride Nepal in Kathmandu
Gai Jatra Pride Nepal, also called the Gai Jatra Third Gender March, is an LGBT march organized by the Blue Diamond Society during the Newar festival of Gai Jatra in Kathmandu. Begun in 2010, it layers pride celebration onto a traditional festival honoring the recently deceased.
Gai Jatra, the Newar festival of the cow, began in the 17th century under King Pratap Malla, who is said to have started the tradition to comfort his grieving queen after their teenage son Chakravartendra Malla died.
