The story

Buddha Jayanti Nepal in Lumbini/Kathmandu/Nationwide

Buddha Jayanti marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha on a single full moon day in the month of Baisakh. Nepal observes it nationwide, with the deepest devotion at Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace, and at the great stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath in the Kathmandu Valley.

Once a year, on the full moon of the Nepali month of Baisakh, Buddhist and many Hindu communities across Nepal pause to mark a single day that holds three of the most consequential moments in the life of Siddhartha Gautama: his birth in the Lumbini gardens, his enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, and his passing into parinirvana in Kushinagar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Buddha Jayanti is unusual among Buddhist holidays because it commemorates three separate milestones of the Buddha's life on the same day, his birth, his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and his passing into parinirvana, giving the observance a layered emotional register of celebration and reflection at once

02

The mystery stays covered

Nepal's claim on the day carries particular weight because Lumbini, in the country's southern Terai plains, is the Buddha's verified birthplace and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing monks and pilgrims from across the Buddhist world

03

The city starts moving

In Kathmandu, the two great stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, ringed by prayer wheels and prayer flags, become focal points for candlelit circumambulation, making the day both a national and an international pilgrimage moment
