Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is observed across Nepal, with the largest gathering at the stone Krishna Mandir in Patan Durbar Square. Devotees fast through the day, sing devotional bhajans, and keep vigil until midnight, the traditional hour of Krishna's birth.
Each year, on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Nepali month of Bhadra, Hindu households across Nepal turn their attention to a story that has shaped devotional life across South Asia for centuries: the midnight birth of Krishna in a prison cell in Mathura, born to parents held captive by a tyrant uncle who had been prophesied to die at the child's hands.
