Amsterdam's Sinterklaas Intocht is the country's largest arrival parade for Sinterklaas, the Dutch precursor to Santa Claus, held each mid-November when he is said to sail in from Spain. Running since 1934 and televised since 1952, it draws several hundred thousand spectators and opens the annual run-up to the December 5 gift-giving evening, Pakjesavond.

Sinterklaas, the Dutch bishop-saint figure who inspired the American Santa Claus, is said each year to sail from Spain to a Dutch town, and Amsterdam has staged the country's largest version of that fictional arrival since 1934.
