Leidens Ontzet in Leiden

Leidens Ontzet is Leiden's annual commemoration of the city's relief from a Spanish siege on 3 October 1574 during the Eighty Years' War. Residents mark the date with the traditional foods tied to the liberation story, eating hutspot stew on the evening of 2 October and free herring with white bread the following morning, alongside a citywide fair, markets, and fireworks.

In 1573, during the Eighty Years' War between the Dutch rebel provinces and Spanish rule, an army loyal to the Spanish crown surrounded Leiden, a city that had joined the revolt against Philip II.
