Rotterdam Summer Carnival in Rotterdam
Rotterdam Summer Carnival, known as Zomercarnaval, began in 1984 and is held annually in Rotterdam around late July. Rooted in the traditions of the city's Cape Verdean, Surinamese, and Antillean communities, its centerpiece is the Grand Carnival Parade, where costumed groups compete with feathered outfits, decorated floats, and sound systems playing soca, kaseko, samba, and Latin rhythms through the streets.
Rotterdam is not the first city that comes to mind when people picture Caribbean carnival, but since 1984, Zomercarnaval, or Rotterdam Summer Carnival, has built exactly that kind of celebration into the city's summer calendar.
