Oerol Festival in Terschelling

Oerol turns the Wadden Sea island of Terschelling into an open-air stage for ten days each June, with site-specific theatre, street performance, music and visual art staged across more than 40 locations. Founded in 1981 and first held in 1982, it draws more than 60,000 visitors annually and has grown into one of Europe's most distinctive theatre festivals.

Oerol began in 1981 as an idea hatched by Joop Mulder, then the owner of a café called De Stoep in Midsland on the island of Terschelling, and took physical form with its first edition on June 18, 1982.
