Easter Fires Twente in Twente

Paasvuren, or Easter fires, are large community bonfires lit at sunset on Easter Sunday or Monday across the Twente region of Overijssel and the neighboring Achterhoek in Gelderland. Rooted in pre-Christian Germanic and Saxon customs, with written records dating to 1559, the fires symbolize the passing of winter and are built from wood collected by local communities over the preceding year.

Long before Easter fires carried any Christian meaning, communities across the Germanic-speaking lands of northern Europe lit bonfires at the turn of the seasons, marking the retreat of winter with fire visible across the flat countryside.
