Auckland Diwali Festival in Auckland
The BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival fills Aotea Square with Indian performance, food, and light projections each October or November, closing with fireworks. Running since 2002 and now drawing more than 65,000 people, it is New Zealand's largest Diwali celebration and one of the country's biggest single cultural festivals overall.
The BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival began in 2002 as an Auckland Council initiative aimed at giving the city's growing Indian community a large-scale public celebration equivalent to Diwali events staged in other major cities with significant Indian diaspora populations.
