The story

Auckland Writers Festival in Auckland

Founded in 1999 by writers Stephanie Johnson and the late Peter Wells, the Auckland Writers Festival is New Zealand's largest literary festival, bringing roughly 200 public events and authors from six continents to the Aotea Centre in the Auckland CBD each May for six days.

The Auckland Writers Festival was founded in 1999 by writers Stephanie Johnson and the late Peter Wells, who set out to build New Zealand's first major festival dedicated specifically to literature, at a time when the country had few dedicated platforms bringing international and local authors together for the public.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

In 2019 the festival received a Māori-language name, Waituhi o Tāmaki, combining words evoking water, song-poetry and writing, and in 2018 it established the Mātātuhi Foundation, a charitable arm funding grants for New Zealand writers and literacy programmes, extending the festival's role beyond programming events

02

The mystery stays covered

The 2025 edition featured more than 200 writers, including Booker Prize winner Samantha Harvey, David Nicholls, Ian Rankin and Colm Tóibín, with attendance reported on par with 2024's record of 85,000 attendances, a scale that has made May scheduling in Auckland notably crowded around the festival's dates
