Big Gay Out in Auckland

Big Gay Out is a free, family-friendly LGBTQ+ community festival held at Coyle Park in Point Chevalier, Auckland, running annually since 2000. Led since 2003 by the Burnett Foundation Aotearoa, formerly the NZ AIDS Foundation, it pairs a summer festival atmosphere with HIV and STI awareness and testing, and crowns Mr Gay New Zealand each year.

When Big Gay Out was first held in 2000, its organisers, drawing on the team behind Auckland's Hero Festival, chose Coyle Park in Point Chevalier for a reason beyond convenience: the site sat close to the home of a former Auckland mayor who had been a vocal opponent of pride events in the city.
