The story

Marlborough Book Festival in Blenheim

The Marlborough Book Festival brings New Zealand authors to Blenheim each winter for a weekend of readings, interviews and discussions. Founded in 2014 by the Marlborough Readers and Writers Charitable Trust, it centres on the Whitehaven Theatre Marlborough, with additional sessions at Blenheim's Te Kahu o Waipuna library, drawing novelists, historians, memoirists and poets to the Marlborough wine region.

Marlborough built its international reputation on Sauvignon Blanc, rows of vines stretching across the plains around Blenheim that made the region synonymous with New Zealand wine.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Founded in 2014, the festival was built specifically to give Marlborough audiences direct access to New Zealand's literary voices without needing to travel to a main centre

02

The mystery stays covered

It pairs well-known novelists and historians with skilled interviewers who draw out the stories behind their books, rather than relying on straight readings alone

03

The city starts moving

The event runs across a late-July weekend, hosted at the Whitehaven Theatre with overflow sessions at the Blenheim library, keeping the festival walkable within the town centre

04

The water draws everyone in

Past and recent programmes have featured historical novelist Monty Soutar, bestselling romance author Nalini Singh and historical fiction writer Olivia Spooner, reflecting a mix of literary and popular fiction rather than one narrow genre

What moves first

Living ritual

The festival grew out of a local charitable trust's effort to bring literary culture to a wine-growing region better known for Sauvignon Blanc than for author events
