World Buskers Festival in Christchurch
The World Buskers Festival fills central Christchurch, Cathedral Square, Victoria Square, and the Arts Centre, with free street performance over roughly ten days each January. Founded in 1993 by street performers who wanted an event of their own, it now programmes more than 240 free shows and around 25 ticketed performances, with acts working purely for hat donations.
The World Buskers Festival began in 1993, founded by a group of New Zealand street performers who felt excluded from the country's other major arts festivals and decided to build one specifically around their own craft.
