The story

Show Me Shorts Film Festival in Multiple cities

Founded in Auckland in 2006 by four film-loving organisers, Show Me Shorts is New Zealand's leading short film festival, screening around 80 selected films at roughly 40 venues nationwide each October, including the country's first Oscar-accredited and BAFTA-qualifying short film festival award categories for filmmakers.

Show Me Shorts began in Auckland in 2006, founded by four organisers, Gina Dellabarca, Tamara Liebman, Katrin Hagen and Kate Nicholson, who had noticed that New Zealand filmmakers produced an unusually high volume of strong short films without any easy way for local audiences to actually see them.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Founders Gina Dellabarca, Tamara Liebman, Katrin Hagen and Kate Nicholson started the festival after noticing New Zealand punched above its weight in short filmmaking without an easy way for audiences to see the results, launching with a three-day screening at Auckland's Academy Cinema in 2006

02

The mystery stays covered

It became New Zealand's first Oscar-accredited festival in 2012, later added Oscar accreditation for Best International Film in 2016, and in 2024 became the country's first BAFTA-qualifying festival, credentials unusual for a festival of its size

03

The city starts moving

Since 2006 it has screened in 40 locations nationwide, including a remote leg on Stewart Island each January and, on at least one occasion, a screening at Scott Base in Antarctica
