Newtown Festival in Wellington

New Zealand's biggest free street fair, Newtown Festival began in 1997 when a local carnival relocated to Riddiford Street, and now closes roughly eleven blocks of the inner Wellington suburb each March for more than 400 stalls and sixteen simultaneous outdoor stages of live music.

Newtown Festival traces back to 1997, when what had been the Carrara Park Carnival moved to Riddiford Street to mark the Wellington City Council's new tree-planting and streetscape improvements in the suburb.
