Fiestas Patronales de Altagracia in Altagracia/Ometepe
Altagracia, on the northern side of Ometepe Island, honors its patron San Diego de Alcala from November 12 through 18 in one of Nicaragua's oldest documented patron-saint celebrations. Its signature tradition, the Baile del Zompopo, has participants imitate leaf-cutter ants using tree branches, said to trace back to pre-Columbian times.
Altagracia, a town on the northern side of Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua, holds what is considered one of the oldest continuously celebrated patron-saint festivals in Nicaragua, honoring San Diego de Alcala, a Spanish Franciscan friar canonized in the sixteenth century.
