Jornadas Darianas Matagalpa in Matagalpa
Ciudad Dario, in Matagalpa department, is the birthplace of poet Ruben Dario, father of the Spanish-language modernismo movement. Each January the Jornada Dariana marks his January 18 birthday with poetry readings, the crowning of a Musa Dariana, exhibitions, and school and university programs that spread outward into other municipalities through early February.
Ciudad Dario, a municipality in Matagalpa department, carries the name of the writer it produced: Felix Ruben Garcia Sarmiento, known to the world as Ruben Dario, the Nicaraguan poet credited as father of the modernismo movement that transformed Spanish-language literature at the turn of the twentieth century.
