Carnaval Acuatico Rio San Juan in San Carlos
San Carlos, at the meeting point of the San Juan River and Lake Nicaragua, hosts the Carnaval Acuatico, known as Alegrias del Pueblo, a water-based carnival that has run for well over a decade and reached its seventeenth edition by 2025. Decorated floats and comparsas move along the water while an accompanying expo fair showcases regional gastronomy, handicrafts, and textiles.
San Carlos, the departmental capital of Rio San Juan at the point where the San Juan River flows out of Lake Nicaragua, hosts one of the country's more distinctive festival formats: the Carnaval Acuatico, also known as Alegrias del Pueblo, or Joys of the People, a carnival celebrated on the water rather than through conventional city streets.
