The festival opens with the tope de los santos, a ceremonial meeting of San Marcos's image with those of neighboring towns' patrons, continues with an early morning alborada and a mass presided by the Archbishop of Managua, and features folkloric dances alongside preparation of what is described as Nicaragua's largest cazuela stew.
San Marcos, a town in Nicaragua's Carazo department, takes its name from its patron, San Marcos Evangelista, Saint Mark the Evangelist, and each year on April 24 and 25 the town stages a two-day festival built around that patronage.
