Fiestas Patronales de Somoto in Somoto
Somoto's patron saint festival honors Santiago Apostol, the town's protector, with ten days of celebration that open on July 16 with a novena and build toward the saint's feast day on July 25. Ribbon races crown a festival queen, horseback riders parade through the streets, and bulls run through the plaza while brass bands play late into the night.
Every July, the northern Nicaraguan town of Somoto turns its attention to Santiago Apostol, the apostle James whose image has stood as the town's spiritual protector since the Spanish colonial period brought the cult of Santiago to towns across Central America.
