Ekpe Festival Cross River in Calabar/Akwa Akpa
Ekpe, also known as Mgbe or Egbo, is a masked leopard society central to Efik, Ejagham, Ibibio, and related communities of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, whose ceremonial appearances in Calabar and Akwa Akpa combine masquerade performance with a living system of law, rank, and communal obligation.
Along the Cross River, in towns including Calabar and Akwa Akpa, one masquerade institution has shaped law, rank, and communal life for longer than almost any other cultural practice in the region: Ekpe, known in some communities as Mgbe or Egbo, meaning leopard.
