Ogun Festival Ibadan in Ibadan
The Ogun Festival in Ibadan honors Ogun, the Yoruba orisha of iron, war, and technology, celebrated annually by hunters, blacksmiths, drivers, and others whose trades are traditionally linked to iron and tools. Ibadan's version carries particular weight given the city's own founding as a nineteenth-century settlement of Yoruba warriors.
Ibadan was not founded as a royal capital in the way Oyo or Ife were, but grew instead from a war camp established in the early nineteenth century by warriors and refugees from across Yorubaland, a history that continues to shape which orisha the city honors most visibly today.
