The story

Kano Durbar Festival in Kano

The Kano Durbar is a four-day equestrian and cultural festival marking the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, in which the Emir of Kano and mounted retinues of the Kano Emirate parade through the city in a tradition dating back over two centuries, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in December 2024.

Few sights in West Africa carry the visual and historical weight of the Kano Durbar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kano hosts the largest and most widely recognized Durbar in Nigeria, staged in the historic seat of the former Kingdom of Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's centerpiece is the Jahi, in which horsemen charge at full speed toward the Emir before abruptly halting and saluting with swords or flags, a display tracing its origins to the era when horses were first used in Kano's warfare roughly two centuries ago

03

The city starts moving

The sequence of ceremonial rides, Hawan Daushe, Hawan Nassarawa, and Hawan Doriya, each has its own route, with the Emir's procession past Kofar Kwaru to pay respects to the Queen Mother forming one of the festival's most storied moments

04

The water draws everyone in

UNESCO's December 2024 recognition of Durbar as intangible cultural heritage placed Kano's version firmly on the international map
